Portrait Of An Interior Designer

Interior designer John Christensen wanted a portrait for his new website but he specifically didn’t want something that looked like a standard photograph and he didn’t want anything that featured him up front and center.

My idea was to focus mostly on the room, but to feature John in multiple places throughout it in hopes it would make the photo more surreal while at the same time take some of the focus off of John himself since there would now be multiple versions of him to draw your attention; one man suddenly becomes a crowd of 4, and in crowds the individual is less of a focus. It would also place John in the position of being reflective of his work by, in a way, watching himself and reviewing what he’s already done.

We shot this in the “green room” of the Sword Gate House on Legare Street, which was decorated by John himself. We were pleased with the results.

Running With Sparklers – Charleston Wedding Photography

We shot a beautiful wedding on Friday at Dunes West. The ceremony was set beneath a large old oak tree backed by water wandering towards the setting sun in the distance. The bride had come to us with and idea just a couple of days before. She wanted to try a shot at night using sparklers to paint in streaks of light around the couple. She later commented that it would look “like a fairytale”.

Naturally, we were all for it. Well into the reception, after the sun had set and most of the guests were dancing the night away, we stole away the bride and the groom, lit some sparklers, and went to work. Here’s what we got.

Angel Oak Tree – John’s Island, SC

In my 7 to 8 years in Charleston I’ve visited the Angel Oak Tree on John’s Island many times, yet for some reason I’d never photographed it. My thoughts were something along the lines of “it’s been done a ton of times by plenty of talented people so why do I need to do it again”? Still, a few weeks back I got the random itch to go visit the tree again and bring my camera along.

In those few weeks I thought about going but never quite made the effort, figuring that when the time was right it would happen, and it seems the time was finally right. I got up at 7:45 this morning and got to the tree just a little before 9 (the time the area normally opens) to find that the gate was already unlocked and I was the first visitor there. It didn’t take long for many, many more to come, but luckily I’ve learned patience when it comes to photographing things. A few hours and a lot of walking around and waiting later I was able to shoot the tree. From the exact same spot everyone else does. And I’m glad I did.

Couple Photography – Engagement Session in Downtown Charleston, SC

Love can span great distances, and these two are proof of that. She lives in America, he lives in Australia, and they only get to see each other when he, a pilot, is over this way for work and has some time off. From the looks of them together you’d think they were together all the time, and it’s clear that they treasure the moments that they do have together.

This was one of my favorite engagements sessions to date. We walked leisurely around beautiful downtown Charleston, SC, stopping wherever they felt the urge to spend a few minutes together just being there. The weather was great and we couldn’t have hoped for a better couple to spend the evening with. Here are some of the results from our time together.

Macro Photography – Insects of Mepkin Abbey

I’m learning a lot about expectations.

This past weekend was spent at Mepkin Abbey in Monck’s Corner, SC with the woman I love. This was the second time I’d been and I had fully planned to spend lots of time photographing the beautiful landscape of the Abbey. However, Friday rolled around and brought with it….clouds……and rain. And they stayed all weekend.

Naturally, I was a bit bummed by nature’s supposed interference with all the beautiful photos I had created in my mind. After much needed rest, twice, and some great, all vegetarian, monk made meals we decided it was time to roam the grounds. In coming upon their labyrinth cut from a field of tall grasses and wildflowers I realized I still had as much to photograph as I desired right in front of my face. The labyrinth was filled with all sorts of interesting insects. I spent hours wandering the curvy path and shooting several bugs that were kind enough to be still for me long enough to photograph them. I had only my Nikon 105mm macro lens with me, so I had to be literally inches away from them to fill the viewfinder. Below are a few of the results from the day.

Later on we stumbled upon some chanterelle mushrooms growing in the woods and spent the remainder of the day hunting out more. We filled half of a shopping bag with the beautiful golden mushrooms, keeping a cup for ourselves and giving the rest to the grateful monks. It was a weekend of rest, good meals, silence, slowness, nature, relaxing, learning, and being. Though it wasn’t the weekend I was expecting, it proved to be more fulfilling than I could have imagined.

Pearl – Charleston Architectural and Portrait Photography

Pearl, a store located in Mt. Pleasant, contacted us for some updated photographs of the owner and manager in their space on Coleman Blvd . We also took the opportunity to photograph the store itself, focusing on the architecture. Diana worked her magic focusing on capturing the two as they sat and worked around the store. I had the task of shooting the interior and exterior of the store itself, and here are a few of my results from the day.

Hummingbird Photos

This past weekend my brother was married in the upstate of South Carolina, between Greenville and Spartanburg in a little town called Fountain Inn. Naturally, Diana and I were asked to be the photographers, though I got the honor of performing dual roles as photographer and best man.

We took the opportunity to spend a weekend in the upstate with my family. Saturday morning we made the drive to my grandparents house to spend a few hours with them. There has always been an abundance of life at my grandparents’ house, both of the animal and plant variety, and this weekend was no exception. One thing that caught me was just how many hummingbirds there were eating at, and subsequently fighting over, the three bright red sugar water containing feeders just through the front windows of the living room. One of these had just been refilled and the ladder was still sitting where it had been left, poised for the next replacement. I spent about half of an hour perched atop this ladder, as still as possible, camera pointed at the feeders. As you can imagine, stopping hummingbirds mid air for a portrait isn’t exactly the easiest task. Nonetheless, here are a few of the photos that came from the day.

Surprise Engagement

We traveled to Hilton Head Island, SC to video a surprise proposal. We went to a nice restaurant on the water that was known for its sunsets. The idea was that we were going to pose as the “house photographers” and then casually ask the couple if they wanted to head outside for some photos. Of course, the groom to be had hired us so was in on it all along. Shortly after arriving to the restaurant we headed out to the deck for a few quick shots, and the rest is history.
